Dumpster Rental in Brighton

A depot town turned county seat, with a historic downtown, new subdivisions and acreage spreading out on every side.

Brighton began as Hughes, a stage and railroad depot in a farming district; the post office took the name Brighton in 1879, the town incorporated in 1887, and it has been the Adams County seat since the county was created in 1901. Its downtown historic district still holds buildings from 1880 to 1945, including Italianate one and two-story commercial blocks.

The city has grown to about 45,000 people (40,083 in 2020), and nearly half its homes have been built since 2000. The work runs from renovations and clean-outs in the older core to move-ins in the new subdivisions and farm and outbuilding clean-ups on the acreage to the north and east. City Hall is about 15 miles north of our yard by I-270 and I-76 or by E-470, so it is same-day or next morning depending on the route.

Do I need a permit in Brighton?

Brighton has no permit written for a dumpster, but its code covers anything placed in a street. Municipal Code Art. 12-16 says no one may place an “encroachment or obstruction of whatever nature” on any public property, right-of-way or sidewalk without first obtaining a permit (§ 12-16-30). The application goes to the Director of Planning and Community Development (§ 12-16-60), the City Manager sets the duration and conditions, the fee is set by the City’s annual fee resolution, and a violation can bring a fine of up to $1,000, up to a year in jail, or both (§ 12-16-200). The code does not name dumpsters, so before any street placement we call the City’s one-stop permitting desk (500 South 4th Avenue, 303-655-2017) rather than quote a permit or a fee. On your own driveway or lot the City publishes no container rule. The City’s Trash Bash large-item drop-off, held in spring and fall for residents, does not take concrete or home-improvement project debris.

FAQ

Brighton dumpster rental questions

  • Is a permit needed for a dumpster in Brighton?
Brighton code Art. 12-16 requires a permit before anything obstructs a street, sidewalk or right-of-way (application to the Director of Planning and Community Development; up to $1,000 and/or a year). It does not name dumpsters, so we call one-stop permitting (303-655-2017) before any street placement. No City rule for your own driveway.
  • How far ahead should I book in Brighton?
A day ahead is safest. City Hall is about 15 miles north of our yard by I-270 and I-76 or by E-470, so it is same-day or next morning depending on the route.
  • Will the Trash Bash take my remodel debris?
No. The City’s Trash Bash drop-off does not take concrete or home-improvement project debris, and it only runs in spring and fall. A 10 to 20-yard on the driveway is the usual answer.
  • I am taking down an old building near downtown. Is there extra review?
There can be. Brighton sends demolition of historic structures to its COA/Demolition Review Committee, which meets within 45 days of the referral, before the Historic Preservation Commission acts. The City publishes nothing requiring approval for the container itself; ask one-stop permitting (303-655-2017) first and we will schedule around the permit.
